AAN Network - NORTH IS ON FIRE, SAYS EX-DEFENCE MINISTER DANJUMA -

“The Somalialisation of Nigeria is taking place right now. We need to sit down and get to the root of the problem and find a solution to it. Let us not deceive ourselves, the Chief Security Officer of a state is the governor. Where are our Northern governors? Borno is a failed state, Jigawa is almost a failed state. Kano is threatening to be a failed state. Where on earth are we going? You hear talks about multi-million naira fences around government houses, what about the people?” - Ex-Defence Minister Gen (Rtd) Danjuma (Source - The Nation 02.05.2012)

My husband is trying to sleep with my daughter" -Cries Yoruba Woman

A middle aged woman, Afusat Ogunrinde, has accused her husband, Ibrahim, of attempting to sleep with her daughter.

Afusat told an Oshodi Grade ‘B’ Customary Court, Lagos, on Monday that Ibrahim made sexual advances to her first daughter, Sidikat, a teenager, who she had for another man.

Afusat said, “I didn’t initially understand what was happening. All I knew was that my husband was always at loggerheads with my daughter.

“There was a time I travelled and when I got back, Sidikat complained to me that my husband woke her up in the middle of the night and asked her to take off her pants and face the wall. I was shocked.”
Afusat said she confirmed her suspicions when an incident happened in her presence.

She said, “We stay in a one-room apartment and there was this day Sidikat suddenly screamed in the middle of the night. When I woke up, I saw my husband close to where my daughter slept.

“When I challenged him, he told me he was pursuing a rat and that the rat climbed his feet and ran towards the place where Sidikat slept. I took the matter up with him and since then he became more quarrelsome with her.”

When asked about the authenticity of her mother’s claims, Sidikat told the court that her stepfather had sexually harassed her.

Sidikat said, “All what my mother said is true. When I refused to give in to my stepfather’s advances, he started persecuting me.

“At a time, he would pour water on the bed when I was fast asleep in a bid to put me in a bad light by accusing me of bed-wetting all because I didn’t allow him to sleep with me.”

Afusat said she had to send her daughter packing due to the development.

She said, “He asked me to take her away or he will kill her if I fail to do so. When I sent her away – to another place three streets away – he still looked for her and beat her up.”

Besides, Afusat told the court that Ibrahim had also threatened to kill her and urged the court to dissolve their 17-year-old marriage, which is blessed with three children.

She said, “He has gone weird of late. He beats me up and would not stop until I get wounded. One night, he came back home drunk, gave me a knife and asked me to kill him. I had to run out of the home to save my life.

“My life is endangered and as far as I’m concerned, this marriage can no longer stand because it has already broken down.”

Meanwhile, Ibrahim denied making advances to Sidikat but admitted battering his wife.

He said,” I took Sidikat as a daughter and would never try to do such a thing. It looked like I was persecuting her because I wanted the best for her.

“Trouble began between me and her when she and my first child altered their school report cards and I tried to correct them.

“I beat both of them and I was surprised that she rebelled and despised me. Since then, we have been living like cat and mouse in the house.”

Ibrahim added that he battered his wife because she was cheating on him, an allegation which Afusat denied.

The acting Court President, Mrs. R.I. Adetola, after hearing both parties warned them to maintain peace pending the determination of the suit.

The case has been adjourned till June 16, for further hearing.

FUEL SUBSIDY SCAM LATEST: FALANA OFFERS FREE LEGAL SERVICE TO HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES AGAINST MULTIPLE LITIGATIONS FROM "POWERFUL COMPANIES AND INDIVIDUALS" ACCUSED IN REPORT -

Lagos lawyer and human rights campaigner, Mr. Femi Falana, says he is throwing himself in the ring to defend the House of Representatives that is currently facing threats of multiple litigation from companies and individuals indicted in the fuel subsidy investigations. The services will be free, he says.

“In view of the threat of some of the indicted companies and individuals to sue the House over the report on the fuel subsidy fraud our law firm has decided to defend the House pro bono publico” Mr. Falana said late yesterday in a statement, adding that “the decision to render our services free …was informed by the resolve of the House to discharge its constitutional duty without fear or favour and in the national interest.”

Mr. Falana’s statement reads in full that:

“Since the Farouk Lawn-led Committee on the mismanagement of fuel subsidy fund submitted its report to the House of Representatives last week an orchestrated campaign of calumny has been launched against the leadership of the Committee and the House. It was even alleged that the House Speaker would be impeached in a desperate bid to cover up the monumental fraud. Some of the indicted companies have gone to the extent of threatening to challenge the powers of the House to probe them and pray the court to annul the report of the Farouk Lawan Committee .

“As a concerned Nigerian i submitted a memorandum to the House Committee. In my oral testimony before the Committee i dwelt, in extenso, on the reckless looting of the fuel subsidy fund by the cartel of public officers and fuel importers. Before then the Federal Government held a town hall meeting in Lagos in December 2011 at the instance of the Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria where I called for an investigation into the subsidygate. Although the Executive ignored the call, the House of Representatives under the leadership of of Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal took it up.

“In the wake of the popular protests against the removal of fuel subsidy the Presidency directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to investigate and prosecute the culprits. I am also collaborating with the EFCC with respect to the investigation.

“Having read the 210- page report of the House Committee I wish to commend the chairman and the members for their courage, patriotism and commitment to accountability and transparency. By rejecting the tempting offers of the cartel of fuel importers the members of the Committee have demonstrated that there are still some public officers who will not sacrifice the interest of the country for personal enrichment.” Source - Premiun Times 26.04.2012

REPS WANT OKONJO-IWEALA, AGANGA, MUHTAR PROSECUTED OVER SUBSIDY SCAM -

If the Federal Government fully implements the recommendations of the House Ad Hoc Committee on Subsidy Probe, the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and her immediate predecessors, Olusegun Aganga and Mansur Muhtar, might face prosecution for their roles in escalating government's fuel subsidy spending between 2009 and 2011.

The House of Representatives said Wednesday in its final approval of the subsidy report that the ministers are culpable as much as heads of some indicted agencies in the mismanagement of the subsidy funds.

Subsidy cost soared mostly between the three years, reaching a high of N2.58 trillion in 2011 against budgeted figure of about N250billion.
